To create this set, I ventured into not-so-usually visited parts of East Java, Indonesia. Unearthed is all about unmasking and unveiling some of the province’s natural wonders and hidden gems.
The pieces in this series are otherwordly views from three epic locations in East Java - the active crater of Mt. Bromo, the world’s largest highly acidic lake, Kawah Ijen, and the tiered Tumpak Sewu waterfalls.
Mountains have always fascinated me. In my five years in landscape photography, they have always been one of my favorite subjects.
In my eye, mountain formations resemble parts of the human body. I have this story in my head where they are actually sleeping titans and I am filled with this sense of calm as I watch them sleep. The sun splashes golden light on those distant peaks and it does not bother the sleepers––the dreamers. Perhaps they are protecting us. Guiding us somehow.
I have always felt grounded and more connected to the world when I am on a mountain. I feel as though they are trying to speak to me, and to photograph them is the only way I can hold that connection and understand what they are trying to say.
“Call of the Titans” is a current collection of 16 1/1 images captured from across the world over five years.
I remember the first time seeing Guilin's landscape was in a series of old Chinese paintings displayed on my grandma's wall when I was a kid.
Fast forward to 2019, I was given the opportunity to visit and photograph the magical landscape of Guilin in China. Seeing it for the first time in person felt like I was instantly transported back in time in that very room where I first saw the painting. Guilin's landscape was like a giant artwork in front of me and that's where the inspiration of each piece from this collection came from—recreating my memory through captured reality.
